On 10 April 2008 around 100 people gathered at Wellington's Frank Kitts Park to mark the 40th anniversary of the Wahine disaster. A plaque dedicated to the rescuers was unveiled by one of the survivors who hoped it will be a permanent thank you note to those who saved so many lives. The plaque includes the name of Mrs May Brightwell Brightwell was among the survivors who battled to shore, but she had been badly injured in the process. After a spell in hospital, she went home to Waimate in Canterbury, before dying from a blood clot in her lung on April 29. Although the coroner recorded she died as a result of the Wahine disaster, Brightwell has never been officially recognised as one of the casualties.

The 10 April 2018 marked the 50th ANNIVERSARY of the Wahine tragedy in Wellington Harbour.

This list is dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the Wahine disaster (51+2) and Cyclone Giselle (3) - 9th and 10th April 1968.
