The names of those who perished are recorded on plaques and boards in various locations around the area.

One such board is in the entrance way at the St Albans Resource Centre and lists the following casualties from the Great War.

There is a Memorial Window in the North Transcept of St Matthews Church in Cranford Street, below which are two plaques commemorating men from the Parish who died during both the Great War and the Second World War.

There are likely other war memorials in the area in one form or another, but considering the names listed here it is possible to find out a little more about some of them.

Charles Chester BRODIE was born in 1886, the son of James M and Florence. He was a Private in 6th (Hauraki) Coy. 1st Battalion, Auckland Regiment, NZEF. His service no. was 12/2656. His widowed mother lived at 25 Kensington Avenue St Albans. Charles was killed on 28th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Caterpillar Valley Memorial, Longueval France.

Lawrence Clyde GOODWIN the son of Mrs T Goodwin of St Albans was a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, NZEF. His service no. was 23/2565. He was killed on 16th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Caterpilla Valley Memorial .

John Thomas GUDSELL was born 18 February 1891 at Springfield the son of Robert and Maria (nee Boekenstein). He was a Private in 3rd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, NZEF. His service number was 34667. His parents operated a diary at 146 Edgeware Road St Albans. The corner of Edgeware Road and Madras Street. John was killed on 4th October 1917 during the third battle of Ypres at Passchendaele and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.

Reginald Eustace LEEMING was born in 1895 the son of Charles and Pearl. He was a Corporal in the NZ Field Artillery. His service no. was 17256. His parents lived at 5 Clare Road St Albans. Reg died on 2nd February 1917 and is commemorated in the Aldershot Military Cemetery.

Hugh STOCKER the son of Archdeacon Harry and Eleanor Mary (nee FEY). He was an Acting Bombardier in the NZ Field Artillery. His service number was 2/2269. His father served in a number of diocese around the South Island and retired to 111 Springfield Road St Albans. Hugh was killed on 15th September 1916 and is commemorated in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval France.

Eric Gordon MILES A twenty three year old Lance Sergeant with the Canterbury Regiment as part of the NZEF, Eric was the son of Henry Martyn, a draper, and Florence Annie MILES. They lived at 54 Office Road St Albans. He was killed at Gallipoli on 7th August 1915, and is commemorated on the Chunick Bair Memorial

Thomas Patrick MAHALM The son of Mrs M Mahalm of Mays Road St Albans, Thomas was a Private with the Canterbury Regiment as part of the NZEF. He was killed at Gallipoli on 7th August 1915, and is commemorated on the Chunick Bair Memorial.

The following are some more of those commemorated on the plaque in St Matthews Church.

Reginald Arthur ALLEN A Private with the Canterbury Regiment as part of the NZEF, he was the son of T P & M J Allen of 102 Office Road St Albans. He died on 16th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Caterpillar Valley Memorial in the Somme, France.

Travis William ARMITAGE He was a Rifleman with the NZ Rifle Brigade. His parents, William Charlesworth, and Elizabeth Anne, lived at 66 Derby Street in St Albans. Travis died on 15th September 1916 at the age of 27, and is commemorated on the Caterpillar Valley Memorial in the Somme, France.

Alan Cecil BARKER The son of W J & Mary, Alan was a Gunner with NZ Field Artillery as part of the 13th Reinforcements. He died on 7th July 1917 at the age of 24, and is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey England.

Leonard Samuel BARTER A Private with the Canterbury Regiment as part of the NZEF, he was the son of John & Mary of 13 Abberley Crescent St Albans. He died on 15th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Caterpillar Valley Memorial in the Somme, France. He was only 20 years old.

John Henry BARTER Based at Featherston with the New Zealand Training Unit, John was 30 years old when he died on 24th November 1918 during the influenza epidemic and was buried in the local cemetery. He was the husband of Mrs A M E BARTER of 13 Abberley Crescent St Albans, and a storeman by occupation.

Johnson BILTON The son of late Robert & Isabella BILTON of Edgeware Road, Johnson was a Private in the Auckland Regiment NZEF. He was 46 years old when he died on 28th February 1917 and is buried in the London Rifle Brigade Cemetery, Comines-Warneton, Hairaut, Belgium.

Eric Stanley Gordon DICKIE A gunner with the 13th Battery NZ Field Artillery, Eric died on 22nd April 1918 and is buried in the Bertrancourt Military Cemetery, Somme France. His parents, William and Clara Eliza DICKIE, lived at 45 Mayfield Avenue. William was a schoolmaster.

Some other men who had St Albans connections include:

Henry Leake ANGUS He was a Private with the 7th Reinforcements as part of the 1st Battalion of the Otago Infantry Regiment NZEF. His parents, Alexander & Margaret, lived at 16 Westminister Street, St Albans. Henry died on 14th July 1916 aged 27, and is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Nord, in France.

Arthur Ernest COTTON He was a Trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, NZEF. His mother lived at 137 Springfield Road St Albans. Arthur was killed in Palestine on 20th February 1918 and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

John DUNIPACE A Scot by birth, John’s parents, Robert & Agnes, lived at 86 St Albans Street, St Albans, and he was a ploughman. He was a Sapper serving with the NZ Engineers when he died in Palestine on 20th October 1918. He is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Israel.
