THE SINKING OF THE SCHOONER KIA ORA
MONDAY 14 DECEMBER 1908
ON NELSON ROCK, KAWAU ISLAND, HAURAKI GULF, AUCKLAND

The wooden schooner rigged scow Kia Ora struck Nelson Rock off Kawau Island. Three of the four crew drowned, the surviving member (unamed)reached safety. after a desperate struggle. The Kia Ora was bound from Ngunguru to Auckland with a cargo of Kauri logs and struck Nelson Rock during a strong gale with a heavy sea.

PIERCY James Seaman c 30 Son of above
YOUNG Thomas Cook - Son of Archibald Young, Shipwright of Auckland

* Edward Piercy was the son of James John Piercy and Te Ngakauiti (Ngati Rangiwewehi, Te Arawa) of Maketu near Te Puke.
