The sad news has reached me, young Ted has been killed,
He died like a hero on a foreign battlefield.
In a land far away, across the deep blue sea,
He sleeps in a grave that I may never see — Only a boy.
New Zealand is now giving the flowers of the land,
When young lads of twenty-two in the trenches they stand.
Though just but a boy, he played a brave part,
For honour of his country he had at his heart — Only a boy.
What more could he give to his Country and King,
A life that’s so young but yet dear to him.
No stone marks the grave of that hero so true
Who died for his country and the Belgians too — Only a boy.
Sleep on in peace, lad, your work is now done
And your comrades will finish the task you begun.
Like all New Zealand soldiers, they will never say die
Until peace is declared in the sweet bye and bye — Only a boy.

When the flags are o'er the roadways and the troops are marching home
To the cheering of the people and the triumph of the drum
We see sisters greeting brothers, we see sons who wave to mothers
Oh, have pity for the eyes that look for those who do not come.
They are sleeping out in France, where their battle-cries have rung
And they heed no burst of cheering and no summons of the drum
Oh, a hero’s death, we prize it, but do we realist it
Oh, have pity for the watching ones, whose lads can never come.
They are sleeping somewhere in France — no matter where
They are just as near to heaven as though they had lain in their beds at home
When the signal of "Cease" was given.

Freely for their country's freedom, all that might have been they give.

Nought for us but phrase of glory "killed in action" — that was all.
Son of Mrs A and the late Mr A Stewart, Taihape, (8th Reinforcements).
On the trampled breast of the battle plain where the foremost rank had wrestled
On his pale, pure face not a mark of pain and the blood of his fresh young heart was shed on his country’s hallowed alter. God's will be done.
Only a grave in a distant clime, England's heritage, England's shrine.

Thank God for that pure, manly heart and true
That kept your face for ever towards the light
That lit the only path you ever knew and made you victor still in Death's despite.
Not all our sighs, not all our tears, can call you back but you, whose clear young eyes
Looked on the promise of the coming years, you never grudged the final sacrifice.
Dear Heart, though art sadly missed.

Are worthy of my larger liberties."
Then drew him with the hand of welcome grace and side by side they climbed the heavenly ways.
