PRESENTATION OF MEDALS — Men decorated at sea
An interesting and unusual ceremony was performed in mid-ocean on board a NZ transport. This was the presentation to non-commissioned officers and men of medals won in France. The circumstances were unique, the ship being in the submarine danger zone and all on board realised the fact that the ceremony had the dignity of the presence of danger and the possible presence of the enemy, resembling battlefield conditions. Commander I A SUTCLIFFE presented the medals. Although not a soldier, he was particularly fitted to do this, having faced the dangers of war since its commencement and having had his former ship sunk by the enemy. Before making the presentation he said that during 46 years of sea service he had been called upon for many and varied duties but he never imagined it would be his privilege to decorate soldiers for gallant deeds performed on the battlefield. He thanked them for having honoured him by asking him to present the decorations and said: "I want you all to know that I am second to none in my admiration for the glorious deeds that are being done every day at the front, done by men hailing from all parts of the Empire and all the world knows how NZ troops have covered themselves with glory over and over again. Those of you from the front have passed through an inferno indeed and I congratulate you on having come safely out of the furnace. It is pathetic to know that often these decorations are handed to the next of kin, the heroes having given their lives. I am glad to know that you are very much alive and what is about equally as good, you are homeward bound."
Distinguished Conduct Medal:
** WARD, M, CSM, Wellington Regt — On 4 October 1917 at Passchendaele, when all his company officers b3ecame casualties during an attack, this NCO took command of the company and lead it in the attack on the final objective.
** MacDONALD, Private A, Otago Regt — On 15 February 1918 at Polygon Wood, this man captured a sniping post and five of the enemy.
Military Medal:
MULLAN, Ftr E, Field Artillery — On 10 April [year not shown] at Messines, this man was successful in getting a disabled gun into action which had been left behind.
FAITHFULL, Sergeant W H, Auckland Regt — On 4 October 1917 at Passchendaele, with the assistance of three men, this NCO captured two machine-guns, taking no prisoners.
GLEESON, 2nd Cpl F C, Engineers — For valuable work rendered with the armies in the field.

A tragic occurrence happened at Awapuni Ambulance Camp on Sunday. A man named BONNER, an officer’s orderly, was handling a returned officer’s automatic pistol in the YMCA premises. The weapon discharged, severing one or two fingers and struck Mr VANCE in the right temple. Mr Vance was taken to the hospital where he died on Sunday. Bonner, who had been instructed to clean up the officer’s gear, was conversing with Vance when the tragedy occurred.
