SHIP SUNK BY ENEMY RAIDER

The NZ Shipping Co. has received advice from London that the steamer Otaki, which was sunk on 10 March by an enemy raider, was commanded by Captain A B SMITH, who had associated with him the following officers:

ON ACTIVE SERVICE

WARD, Mr Vincent, second son of Sir Joseph Ward, has obtained a commission in the RNVR

WARD, Lieut Gladstone, ASC, third son of Sir Joseph Ward, left England last week for the Front.

WOODS, Sergeant B A, AMR, now has a commission in the British Armoured-car Squadron, RNVR.

EDWARDS, Lieut E, 22nd AIB, is in the Third London General Hospital at Wandsworth, from France, suffering from gunshot wound and excision of the left eye.

JENNINGS, Mr A G, son of W T Jennings, MP, has been granted a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was previously with the Main Body, NZEF and was invalided owing to concussion.

NATHAN, Mr J E, son of Mr D J Nathan of Wellington, has returned to England after serving for more than a year as a driver in the First British Red Cross unit on the Austrian front in Italy. He was recently awarded the Italian War Medal for dressing wounded in the fire trenches.

BARCLAY, Major G, NZE, of Auckland, has been on short leave in London for the purpose of meeting Mrs Barclay who recently arrived in England.

MASSEY, Lieut F G, NZRB, son of the Prime Minister, acted for a while as staff captain of the 1st, Infantry, Brigade.

COOPER, Lieut Robert E, RGA, of Auckland, arrived about a year ago to join the Imperial Forces and went to France. After some months’ service he joined the headquarters staff.

GEMMINGS, Pte T A C, who died at Kopu, was accorded a military funeral. He was shot through the lungs at Gallipoli. Three other sons have been killed in action and one invalided to England. Two sons in law are also serving.

DEVONPORT — It is proudly recorded by the committee of the Devonport School District that no fewer than 370 old boys of the schools and teaching staff have volunteered for the Empire’s forces. Of these, 30 have been killed in action or have died of disease. At least 32 of the 370, or nearly 10%, either held or have held, commissions.

DONOVAN, Staff Sergeant-Instructor R, a non-commissioned officer in the employ of the Defence Dept, died in the public hospital on Friday. He was previously employed with the Tramways Co. at Auckland, Waihi and Narrow Neck camp. A military funeral was accredited the deceased on Sunday at Waikumete. The firing party was send from the Maori reinforcements camp at Narrow Neck and 8 Sergeant Majors acted as pall bearers.

WOOD, Major F A, MC, NZSC, who was Adjutant of the Auckland Mounted Rifles in the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, has lately undergone two further operations in Dunedin for the removal of pieces of cloth and metal from his right arm and is convalescent after three weeks in hospital. He is now on the Dunedin District Staff.
