RHODES SCHOLARSHIP
FIVE WON BY AUCKLANDERS
Twelve Rhodes scholarships have now been awarded to graduates of the University of New Zealand. Five have been gained by students of Auckland College, four by students of Otago University, two by students of Victoria College, Wellington, and the scholarship for this year has been awarded to a graduate of Canterbury College for the first time. The full list of the New Zealand Rhodes scholars is as follows:-

RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS
The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee meets on December 1. Two scholars are to be appointed - one to take the place of Lieutenant Athol HUDSON, killed in France.
Victoria College: McKENZIE, H A, s/o Professor McKenzie
MELDRUM, A F, s/o Lieut Col Meldrum
McKenzie is going into camp and Meldrum is now at the Front.
Auckland: PLATT, W M
REYNOLDS, H E
Otago: RHINESMATH, Albert Martin, B.Sc.
HINTON, John Wilkie, B.Sc.

RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS
The NZ Rhodes Scholars for 1917 are:
PONDER, Arthur Osborne, B.A., Canterbury College
MELDRUM, Alexander Francis, Victoria College, Wellington
Both now serving with the expeditionary forces.
The second scholarship was available owing to the death in action of Lieut Athol Hudson, the 1916 Scholar.
Candidates nominated from the four university colleges were:
Auckland: W M PLATT and H E REYNOLDS
Victoria: H A McKENZIE and A F MELDRUM
Canterbury: R J RICHARDS and A O PONDER
Otago: A M RHINESMITH and J W HINTON

Mr A O PONDER is 22 yrs of age. He was second on last year's list for the scholarship. Educated at the Normal School, he won the junior and senior scholarships and later attended the Christchurch Boys' High School. In 1911 he gained a junior scholarship, being placed second on the list for NZ and obtaining a special mention in mathematics and chemistry. He had a distinguished career at the university. He was studying for his M.A. degree and was engaged in research work in chemistry when he enlisted in June 1915 in the NZ Rifle Brigade. He is now serving in France.
