WEBSTER, MARJORIE DORIS

Marjorie Webster was born in Auckland in 1918, and came to Hawera with her parents Harold Edward and Lillie Castle Webster nee Cox, when her father became principal of the Hawera Main Primary School in 1939.  Marjorie taught there herself from 1939 and when Ramanui School opened in May 1953, she became the first infant mistress, and was there until August 1959.

Marjorie was a founder member of the Hawera Repertory Society, and was known as a very competent actress and comedienne.  She is probably best remembered for her role as a 16 year old in No Room At The Inn when she was 30 odd.  She also produced one-act plays and was a prize winning play-write.  Nationally, she was a member of the National Drama League and served on the New Zealand Theatre Federation as an executive.

Marjorie was also a foundation member of the Hawera Professional and Business Women's Association, and as she had a great love of animals, was very involved with the SPCA.

In the early 1960's, she became the drama tutor at the Palmerston North Teachers' Training College and was there until her retirement.  She taught Ngaire Riley (nee Potter) of Hawera, drama at the college, and was Ngaire's mentor for her subsequent career in drama.  While at training college, Ngaire directed her first play under Marjorie's tuition, and they won the Manawatu One-Act Drama Festival - the first time a student production had won.

Marjorie returned to Hawera regularly to judge for the Hawera Competitions and also for local drama festivals.  Upon her retirement, Marjorie had six to eight students boarding with her at a time, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Marjorie Webster died on the 31 May 1986 at Palmerston North aged 67 years.
